Healing in Taos

Somewhere between the massage table and the sound bowl, I keep finding the same invitation: Be held, be heard, and learn to listen.

I’ve been coming to the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram, in Taos, since before I moved to northern New Mexico seven years ago—in fact, it was part of why I stayed. Every visit is different, yet some constants remain: no expectations, and always an opportunity to get grounded and listen. This same quality of listening vibrates through the town—some say it’s the mysterious Taos Hum, that low-frequency rumble only certain people can hear. For more than a millennium, Taos Pueblo has anchored these lands. In recent decades, Hindu devotees, Buddhist communities, artists, homesteaders, and seekers have layered their practices alongside Native and Hispanic traditions that never left.

What makes Taos rare isn’t the breadth of spiritual traditions—it’s how they coexist on land that has always been sacred, creating something you can’t manufacture elsewhere: a place where wellness is more elemental than marketed.

What moved me most while reporting “High Desert Healing,” was the celebration of living history, the alive-ness of this place. As hypnotherapist Alicia Boyes told me, more than a destination, Taos is a relationship—one that invites us to show up with humility, respect, and curiosity, and reflects back what we’re ready to receive.

ESSENTIALIST WELLNESS MONOGRAPH

  • A woman receives an Ayurvedic shirodhara treatment, where warm oil is gently poured onto her forehead from a tall vessel, with steam or incense smoke surrounding her.

    Essentialist Tool Kit

As the new year begins, many of us lean into resolutions–grand plans for self-improvement that often lead to unrealistic expectations and, ultimately, discouragement. Studies show this mindset can backfire, fostering feelings of inadequacy when outcomes fall short. Rather than striving to “fix” ourselves–language which sends a subtle signal that something is wrong with us to begin with, that we need to be better or different–what if we approached the year ahead with compassion and encouragement?

  • Living room with a beige sofa, two orange pillows, two round black coffee tables, a woven vase, and a wooden wall hanging with carved floral and hexagonal patterns.

    Self-Led Self Care

Not every escape needs a structured program. Sometimes the most profound transformation happens when no one is telling you what to do. These three properties offer the space to design your own wellbeing experience—whether solo or with like-spirited souls.

  • Six avocados in a glass bowl on a green fabric background.

    The Daily Well

With wellness tourism estimated to cross the $1 trillion mark in 2024, and travelers in pursuit of trends such as rest and recovery, sexual wellbeing, biohacking, community and social impact, as well as an increase in in-house experts and customized consultations, it’s easier than ever to feel good wherever we are with through offerings  and products that center health and wellness in daily life.

  • A swimming pool with dark water next to a concrete patio, surrounded by lush green plants and trees, in a modern outdoor setting.

    Land of the Good Fruit

Called “the land of the good fruit” by Euripides for its beauty and fertile rich earth, Messinia is in an area of great historical significance and stunning landscapes where well-being has been a way of life since time immemorial.
